20+ years ago, when I started this venture, there were no commercial on-line store packages that did want I wanted or could be modified to provide the user interface and features that I wanted to present to my customers.

I selected an upstart open source package called Agora-Cart. (still available and supported by the original author after many upgrades to keep it current). I spent months customizing it to create the functionality and user feel I wanted. After modification it was installed on my server and has been working since that day.

Because of my extensive modifications to the store software, it is very hard to incorporate the many extensive up-grades that Mr. Ed has produced over the years. The normal version upgrade process would wipe out lots of my custom features and create incompatibilities between the server based store and my local based support software. Last I checked Mr. Ed was on version 12 and I'm still on a little less than version 6. But the store keeps on trucking 24/7 for 20 years with very few problems.

I prefer USPS shipping and offer several USPS options during checkout. I also offer UPS ground and UPS next day because its best for some products and customer needs. Fed-Ex is not offered primarily because the nearest Fed-Ex drop point was in the opposite direction from my daily USPS and UPS delivery runs.

Recently the UPS shipping options have stopped working. There is a problem when the store tries to get shipping cost from UPS. I assume its caused by a change that UPS make to the interface (could be just a link change). I don't have the time or energy to track down the issue and dig into the server software to fix it. So the store is now running on USPS alone.
